Surface ablation and its drivers along a west–east transect of the Southern Patagonia Icefield

چکیده
Abstract Glaciers in the Southern Patagonia Icefield (SPI) have been shrinking recent decades, but due to a lack of field observations, understanding drivers ablation is limited. We present distributed surface energy balance model, forced with meteorological observations from west–east transect located north SPI. Between October 2015 and June 2016, humid warm on-glacier conditions prevailed on western side compared dry cold eastern side. Controls differ along transect, although at glacier-wide scale sensible heat (mean 72 W m −2 west 51 east) net shortwave radiation 54 52 provided main sources. Net longwave was an sink, while latent most spatially variable flux, being sink east (−4 ) source (20 ). Ablation high, comparable elevations, it greater west. These results provide new insights into spatial variability energy-balance fluxes their control over Patagonian glaciers.

متن کاملSeasonal Variations in Ice-Front Position Controlled by Frontal Ablation at Glaciar Perito Moreno, the Southern Patagonia Icefield
The front position of calving glaciers is controlled by ice speed and frontal ablation which consists of the two processes of calving and subaqueous melting. However, the relative importance of these processes in frontal variation is difficult to assess and poorly understood, particularly for freshwater calving glaciers. To better understand the mechanism of seasonal variations involved in the ...
متن کاملElevation and Mass Changes of the Southern Patagonia Icefield Derived from TanDEM-X and SRTM Data
The contribution to sea level rise from Patagonian icefields is one of the largest mass losses outside the large ice sheets of Antarctica and Greenland. However, only a few studies have provided large-scale assessments in a spatially detailed way to address the reaction of individual glaciers in Patagonia and hence to better understand and explain the underlying processes. In this work, we use ...
متن کاملModeling past and future surface mass balance of the Northern Patagonia Icefield
Glaciers are strongly retreating and thinning in Patagonia. We present new inferences about the climatic situation and the surface mass balance on the Northern Patagonia Icefield in the past and the future using a combined modeling approach. The simulations are driven by NCAR/NCEP Reanalysis and ECHAM5 data, which were physically downscaled using the Weather Research and Forecasting regional cl...
